Rather than establishing the framework itself, these materials encourage the eye to travel naturally from one element to the next. Unlike Line materials which establish the shape of a design, Directional materials enhance the journey through it.

Designers use them to carry movement throughout a composition, bridge visual gaps, and create a natural rhythm without adding significant visual weight.

• Materials that connect surrounding elements
• Movement without heaviness
• Visual rhythm and continuity

Ask Yourself —

• If I removed this material, would the design feel more static or disconnected?
• Does this material help carry the eye naturally from one area of the design to another?

If the answer is yes, you're likely looking at a Directional material.
